Week in Review:

Thursday, December 27th, 2012 at Kelowna Rockets – 7-3 Loss

The Blazers returned from the 10-day holiday break with a holiday hangover as they fell 7-3 in Kelowna. The Blazers were done in by two 5-on-3 goals in the middle frame that gave the Rockets a 4-1 lead. Tim Bozon scored twice for the Blazers while Colin Smith tallied the other goal. Cole Cheveldave was pulled after two periods in goal with Taran Kozun finishing the game. Recap and Highlights.


Saturday, December 29th, 2012 vs. Vancouver Giants – 9-5 Win

Goals were easy to come by as the Blazers outscored the Giants 9-5 in front of a sell-out at ISC. Tim Bozon and Cole Ully each had hat-tricks and four-point nights. Chase Souto also enjoyed a four-point night which was the first of his WHL career. Cole Cheveldave had a tough outing as he was pulled after the fourth goal and Taran Kozun took the load earning the win in goal. Sam Grist and Brendan Ranford each enjoyed three-point games. Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013 at Vancouver Giants – 4-2 Win

The Blazers scored twice in the third period to earn a 4-2 win in Vancouver. The Giants had two leads erased on goals by Joel Edmundson and Dylan Willick to tie the game into the third period. Tim Bozon scored the winner in the third period off of a rush and Chase Souto added some insurance with a power play marker. Taran Kozun went the distance making 22 saves for the win. Friday, January 4th, 2013 vs. Seattle Thunderbirds – 6-1 Win

The debut of 20-year-old forward Kale Kessy was a good one as he scored twice in a 6-1 home ice win. Brendan Ranford had a big night as he set up four goals in the win. Cole Ully was also terrific with a goal and two assists. Taran Kozun started his second straight game and was solid making 22 stops for the Blazers. Josh Connolly, with his first WHL goal, Joe Kornelsen and Matt Needham scored the other Blazer goals. Recap and Highlights.


JC Lipon, Marek Hrbas and Jordan Thomson with International Duty

Three Blazers who have been away representing their country will return to the Blazers this week. JC Lipon who was on Canada’s World Junior Team will return to Regina for a few days and meet the Blazers in Prince George this weekend for two games against the Cougars. Lipon was pointless in five games at the tournament.

Defenseman Marek Hrbas, who played for the Czech Republic at the World Junior Tournament, will rejoin the Blazers on Tuesday, January 8th. Hrbas scored a goal and was a team leading +4 at the tournament.

Defenseman Jordan Thomson, who suited up for Team West at the U-17 World Challenge in Drummondville and Victoriaville in Quebec, is back practicing with the hockey club. Thomson was an Assistant Captain for Team West and had three assists in five games.

Lipon, Clouston and Chyzowski Make Debuts

With regulars out of the line-up due to international tournaments and injuries a pair of 16-year-olds made their debuts with the Blazers. Forward Mitch Lipon was pointless in three games over the holidays, while defenseman Connor Clouston was also pointless in three games played with the Blazers.

15-year-old forward Nick Chyzowski suited up for one game on January 4th against the Seattle Thunderbirds. Chyzowski followed current Blazers forward Matt Needham as the second father-son combination to wear the Blue and Orange colours.

Former Blazers Micki Dupont and Devan Dubnyk win Spengler Cup

Two former Blazers helped Team Canada win the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland over the holiday season. Defenseman Micki Dupont (1996-2000) and goaltender Devan Dubnyk (2001-2006) each were a part of Canada’s Gold Medal winning team. Dubnyk is currently a goaltender with the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL, while Dupont plays overseas for Kloten in the Swiss-A League.

Prospect Jesse Shynkaruk wins Mac’s Midget Tournament MVP

Forward prospect Jesse Shynkaruk was named tournament MVP and a first-team All-Star at the prestigious Mac’s Midget AAA Tournament in Calgary. Shynkaruk had 13 points in six games for the Saskatoon Contacts at the tournament.

Blazers Sign 15-Year-Old Prospect Sideroff

The Kamloops Blazers have signed 15-year-old forward Devin Sideroff to a standard WHL Education contract. Sideroff is playing with the Okanagan Hockey Academy Midget Prep team. In 35 games this season, he has 12 goals, 29 assists and 41 points which has him fourth in team scoring.

Scott Niedermayer Retirement Night Approaching

The Kamloops Blazers will be retiring Scott Niedermayer’s #28 on Friday, January 25th when the Prince Albert Raiders are in town. Niedermayer, who played with the Blazers from 1989-1992, is one of hockey’s all-time great defensemen. To find out more on his career accomplishments, follow this link.

Kale Kessy Acquired By Blazers

The Kamloops Blazers got bigger with the acquisition of 20-year-old forward Kale Kessy. Kessy was a fourth round selection of the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The rugged forward has 11 goals and 20 points on the season. For more on the Kessy trade, follow this link.
